“Beyond Aripeka - Nature Coast Salt Marsh,” an original acrylic landscape painting, copyright by Susan Walton of S. A. Walton Studio, Hudson, Florida.
This is a coastal painting inspired by the salt marshes off Florida’s west coast, its Gulf Coast, in Hernando County, somewhere between Aripeka and Weeki Watchee.
If you look very close at the art work, you can see a lone figure fishing, but he does not dominate the scene. Native cabbage palms dot the landscape, and you can make out the shapes of a cedar here and there. In the distance can be seen an island with longleaf pine, isolated by a sunlit sea.
The first time I saw the salt marshes here in Florida, it was from an observation tower on the Nature Coast, and the scene, while beautiful, was a bit marred by the presence of a dock or some park structure off to one side, intended to make it more accessible.
In painting the scene I took the liberty of removing the structure because it hasn’t been there long enough to develop some character and was rather lacking in grace. It was built for recreational fishing, not to please artists, after all.
This is a work in progress; I hope you enjoy taking in the sunset in this serene seascape.
